The pitch to a robot umpire is supposed to be simple: with a consistent, accurate zone, a hitter can finally trust his eyes and lay off the borderline junk. Discipline gets easier; chase should fall. Instead, through 2026, the league is chasing more — out-of-zone swing rate is up from 30% to 32.3%, a +2.3 point jump.

The obvious objection is the calendar: we only have a couple of months of 2026, and early-season numbers are noisy. So we didn’t compare a full 2025 to a partial 2026 — we compared the exact same calendar window (03-27 to 05-27) in both years. The rise holds.

Where the extra chasing happens

Breaking it down by the count tells the story of why. The robo-zone’s effect on chase isn’t uniform — it concentrates where the strike zone matters most.

Why it might be happening

A few plausible mechanisms, none yet proven — we’re reporting the pattern, not the cause:

  • The zone moved. The 2026 ABS zone isn’t the umpire zone hitters learned. We’ve documented the top edge shrinking; if the enforced boundary differs from a hitter’s internal map, “balls” he used to take are now swung at.
  • Pitchers adjusted first. If pitchers attack the new edges more aggressively, more hittable-looking pitches sit just off the plate.
  • Less framing noise to fear. With a robot calling it, the penalty for taking a borderline pitch is certain, which can paradoxically encourage protecting the plate by swinging.

What we can say cleanly: the simple story — “a fair zone makes hitters more patient” — is not what the first season of full ABS shows.

Methodology

Chase = swing rate on pitches outside the rulebook zone (|plate_x| > 0.83 ft or outside the batter’s vertical zone). To remove seasonality we restricted both seasons to the identical calendar window (03-27 to 05-27) rather than comparing a full 2025 to a partial 2026. The +2.3-point rise is descriptive; we make no causal claim about ABS pending more of the 2026 season. Per-hitter chase is highly stable year over year (r ≈ 0.76), so the league shift reflects a real behavioral change, not reshuffling.
